(Philadelphia, PA) - The City of Philadelphia Streets Department recently announced the expansion of its innovative single stream residential recycling collection method. Beginning March 5, 2007, approximately 93,000 households located in West and Southwest Philadelphia* will join 123,000 Northeast Philadelphia residences in being able to set out all recyclables, including flattened cardboard and #1 and #2 plastic containers (generally beverage and detergent containers), into one container for curbside pickup.

Lewis Wendell, Executive Director of University City District (UCD), the neighborhood and business improvement organization just west of downtown Philadelphia, added, “As a University City resident and a committed recycling advocate, I am pleased that our efforts at UCD working with the City to get improved recycling in University City have finally paid off.  We welcome the new program with open arms and we are doing our part at the University City District to publicize the program and help insure its success along with our partners in the City Streets Department.”

West and Southwest Philadelphia residents may continue to use their blue recycling bins for curbside collection.  Should one bin not be enough to hold all recyclables, residents may add another container and mark it "recycling", or pick up a recycling sticker at University City District, 3940 Chestnut Street.  Streets Department street team efforts began door-to-door on February 19, disseminating flyers.  Team members are identifiable by the orange (traffic safety style) vest with the words "Philadelphia Recycling Ambassador" on the back panel.
