Police Substation

Adjacent to the University City District Operations Center at 3940-42 Chestnut Street is the UCD Police Substation. Commanded by a Lieutenant and two Sergeants, 25 Philadelphia Police officers provide supplemental coverage to the 18th, 16th and 12th districts. The substation is staffed seven days a week from 8am to 2am. The close proximity of the Police to UCD staff allows for cooperation and collaboration that benefits public safety in the district.

In 2001, the UCD Police Substation began using GIS-based technology to track crimes and spot trends. The UCDCAMS (University City District Crime Analysis and Mapping System) application allows offenses to be mapped across the three police districts University City spans. The UCDRDA (UCD Resource Deployment Application) helps the police strategize deployment by mapping PPD officers, patrol cars, institutional police and security, and UCD Ambassadors in reaction to incidents.

This combination of technology and cooperation among personnel has had significant effect: major crime decreased 19% in 2002 and 16% the previous year - part of a four-year downward trend in offenses in University City. Crime categories most dramatically reduced in 2002 were homicide (-50%), residential burglary (-62%), and auto theft (-47%).
