Tune Into WPEB, West Philadelphia’s Community Radio Station

Below is an excerpt from Will Dean’s article in the May 14 edition of CityPaper. Click on the cover (right) to read the entire article.

On Sat., May 17, the noncommercial educational FM station WPEB (88.1) — which shut down in 2005 after legal allegations of interference from Channel 6 — will relaunch as a community-based station to give West Philadelphians a voice on the air. The new WPEB will feature community news, public affairs, music and talk, all recorded and produced by volunteer residents. They'll kick it all off that day with a big party at the station (541B S. 52nd St.) with entertainment and giveaways, plus live broadcasting from noon to 6 p.m. It is a rare moment for community media, and Philadelphia media in general, as it is next to impossible to start any kind of new FM station in a huge urban market like Philly, much less a nonprofit community one. . . . WPEB is a joint project of the Media Mobilization Project (itself a part of the Philadelphia Independent Media Center, an activist news Web site at phillyimc.org), the Scribe Video Center (a nonprofit dedicated to community media) and the Prometheus Radio Project (an activist group that agitates for media freedom and helps set up community radio stations around the world).

Twin Houses of University City House Tour
June 1, 1-5pm

“Twin Houses of University City” highlights the unique side-by-side houses of Philadelphia’s earliest garden suburbs. Be they ante-bellum Italianate, Victorian Queen Anne or Twenties Revival, with their joined porches, side gardens and walkways, they offered new lifestyle experiences for their occupants. Unlike row houses, their densely-built city counterparts, and unlike single family houses, their spacious suburban relatives, Philadelphia's twin houses were designed to include the best of both styles. This self-guided walking tour of over a dozen examples in western University City will take you inside both historic restorations and creative adaptations of this living tradition of shared independence and elegance, followed by an end-of-tour reception with light refreshments.

UCHS Members discounted advanced sale tickets: $20 Each. Orders and payment must be received by friday, May 28, 2008 to permit confirmations to be returned. All tickets on the day of the tour: $35/Each

World Cafe Live Announces "LiveConnections.org"

World Cafe Live is pleased to announce the formation of “LiveConnections.org,” a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding our community engagement programming efforts.

On Thursday, May 15th, LiveConnections.org launched the first of three pilot programs, “Bridge Sessions,” bringing together public, parochial and charter schools from Center City and West Philadelphia with great musicians from the Philadelphia area. Bridge Sessions are designed as fun, experiential events that stimulate learning about music, about how cultures connect and about how we can cross boundaries and understand new points of view. Each Bridge Session will feature great music from a variety of traditions and engage artists and audiences in an exchange of sounds, ideas and perspectives.
