University City District Responds to Community Requests and Publishes New Community and Public Safety data on www.ucityphila.org

In an effort to improve communication to the community, University City District has made recent enhancements to its website. In cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, the Philadelphia Police Department and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, University City District (UCD) is acting on neighborhood concerns regarding the lack of information on crimes committed and arrests made in University City and is publishing arrest and crime data at http://www.ucityphila.org/ ucd_programs/public_safety/crime-and-arrest-reports. In addition, UCD has created a ‘Living in University City’ section (http://www.ucityphila.org/about_ucity/living-in-university-city) making it easy to locate detailed data and demographics on University City historic districts, neighborhood associations, housing, education and people.

Lewis Wendell, Executive Director for University City District says, “The University City District has been considering providing additional information on the community and public safety on our website for some time now. After discussions with residents and with our public safety partners in University City, we have rolled out these new features on our website that will provide more information on living in the neighborhood as a resource for new-comers and visitors as well as detailed information about crime in the area. We want to empower our community with this information so that they can ensure their own personal safety and property, and it is our intention that this information will be helpful and will act as a reference point for residents interested in finding out what is happening in their neighborhood.”

The Bacon Brothers Are Coming to University City on April 4!

For as long as they can remember, the brothers Bacon have played music together. Throughout the years, they performed casually for friends & family. In the early ‘90s, having established successful film & music careers respectively, Kevin & Michael revisited their childhood collaboration and created The Bacon Brothers band. They have recorded five albums (four in-studio & one live), beginning with 1997’s Forosoco. On April 4th, Philadelphia will welcome the brothers home for two benefit performances at the Zellerbach Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in University City. The band—led by actor/musician Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael—will entertain audiences to support Bancroft NeuroHealth, a provider of services to children and adults with autism, developmental disabilities, brain injuries and other neurological impairments. Concert ticket prices for the 7:00 and 9:30 pm shows start at $35. “Pit seats” directly in front of the stage cost $60 and come with a T-shirt and goody bag. A limited number of VIP tickets are available at $250 each, and include the first show and a wine-and-cheese reception with the Bacons. Those interested in VIP tickets should contact Hilda Bacon directly at (856) 429-5637, ext. 485.

The 950-seat Zellerbach Theatre is at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Center, at 3680 Walnut Street. To purchase tickets, call Annenberg at (215) 898-3900 or visit www.baconbros.com.

63 New Trees Planted in University City
UC Green and West Philadelphia Tree Tenders planted 63 bare root trees this month in honor of the beginning of Spring. The trees, including maples, chokecherries, tree lilacs, London planes, serviceberries and lindens were planted in Powelton Village, Walnut Hill, Spruce Hill, West Shore and Garden Court by neighborhood volunteers who are part of a citywide tree stewardship program called Tree Tenders, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Currently there are over 2000 Tree Tender graduates from over 100 different neighborhoods around Philadelphia. A list of the active groups in West Philadelphia can be found at www.ucgreen.org along with other information about trees, gardening, block improvement initiatives and community greening in the area.
