University City Community Cleanup | Saturday, April 5
Please join University City District and the City of Philadelphia in an effort to remove over 1 million pounds of litter and trash from our city.
In December 2007 UCD broke records collecting over 3000 bags of trash and leaves. For our first cleanup of 2008, we’re teaming up with the Mayor Nutter and the entire City of Philadelphia in an effort to remove over 1 million pounds of litter. But, we can’t do it without YOU!
University City District will assist your block by providing trash bags, work gloves, and trash/litter pick up. For more information or to sign up for the April 5 University City Cleanup, please contact Dexter Bryant at dexter@ucityphila.org or 215-243-0555 x236.

Grand Opening of Studio 34 Yoga | Healing | Arts Center
University City welcomes a new face to Baltimore Avenue at the end of this month, when Studio 34 Yoga | Healing | Arts Center officially opens its doors with a special Grand Opening weekend – March 28-30.
Located at 4522 Baltimore Avenue, Studio 34 will offer yoga, Pilates, healing arts, creative arts, family programs, and neighborhood-building services in what its co-founders – Stephen Fisher, Angela Norris and James Peniston, themselves long-time University City residents – call “a community-centric environment unlike any other in Philadelphia.”
At 5,000 square feet, Studio 34 offers the largest yoga facility in the region, featuring two studios, four wellness rooms, a conference room, and a community lounge with a performance stage.
The studio will rent wellness rooms to healing-arts providers such as massage therapists, social workers, and reiki practitioners. “This supports independent providers, helping them fill our community’s need for affordable wellness services,” Norris said.

| Friends For Effective Education present Tribute Medallion Award to Benefit St. Francis de Sales School in West Philadelphia
Friends For Effective Education (FFEE), a non-profit organization founded in 2003 to provide monetary support to schools that exhibit educational leadership, announced that it will present its Tribute Medallion Award on April 16th, 2008 to Attorney and St. Francis graduate, Jerry McHugh and his wife, Maureen Tate. The event, to be held at Drexel University, will be chaired by Barbara and R. Barrett Noone, M.D. and Missy and Ric Pinola. Ann Marie and Paul A. Geary, Jr. and Freeman M. Zausner serve as Tribute Book Co-Chairs and the Honorary Event Chairs are the Honorable Edward G. Rendell and Speaker of the House Dennis M. O’Brien. Kathy Orr, CBS 3 Meteorologist, will serve as the host and Raynes McCarty is the presenting sponsor of the event.
Jerry McHugh is a life-long resident of West Philadelphia and a plaintiff attorney with Raynes McCarty. Maureen Tate, is also a life-long Philadelphian and has become a community leader in a series of Church and neighborhood service projects. She currently serves as a member of the National Leadership Team for the U.S. Grail, an international women’s organization. Jerry and Maureen embody many of the goals that St. Francis de Sales sets for its students by serving as activists for community and world peace, leaders in academics and society, and responsible and respectful individuals.
According to Paul A. Geary, Jr., President of FFEE, "Jerry and Maureen's lifetime of genuine concern for and involvement in their Church, school and neighborhood communities is a crystal clear reflection of the ideals of St. Francis de Sales. These same ideals can be seen in the Sisters, teachers and children of the School."
Under the leadership of Sr. Constance Touey, IHM, Sr. Jeannette Lucey, IHM and Sr. Mary McNulty, IHM, St. Francis de Sales serves over 500 students in grades K through 8. Families come from more than 40 countries and over 50% live under the poverty line. The school firmly believes that all children can learn and makes it their duty to provide a supportive, enriching, and value-based educational experience. Its nationally recognized Peace Program teaches students to resolve their differences without violence and to cope with the circumstance of their surroundings.
