Auction to Raise Funds for Neighborhood Bike Works
Friday, August 1 at 7:00pm

The Rolling Canvas Art Collective – presented by Fuji Bikes with Jinxed Philadelphia, and R.E.Load Baggage – celebrates the union of art and urban bicycle culture with a showcase of work by local artists.

Over twenty area artists were asked to rethink and reexamine the idea of the bicycle, transforming a simple fixed gear bike into a one-of-a-kind art installation. Artists include Adam Wallacavage, Eleanor Grosch, Awesome Dudes Printing and Dustan Klein. These installations – created in a variety of media from metal work to street art to painting – will be auctioned off. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will benefit Philadelphia non-profit Neighborhood Bike Works.

The public gallery opening and auction will be held on August 1st at 7pm at the Media Bureau Gallery in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. The exhibit will remain open to public visitors until the end of August. A public online auction will also be open from August 4th through August 17th at www.rollingcanvascollective.com.

UCD's Summer Job program expands while encouraging civic pride

UCD is proud to announce the continuation and expansion of our summer jobs program for 2008. In partnership with the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition's Workready Philadelphia program and generous support from Campus Apartments, Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania, INTECH, Promed, The Science Center and University of Pennsylvania, UCD has created 30 new jobs for high school Juniors and Seniors. A majority of this year's participants are from West Philadelphia. They will assist UCD's ongoing revitalization efforts by cleaning and mowing vacant lots, watering, weeding and mulching trees and flowers, removing litter in parks and other public spaces and undertaking other special community projects. As part of the UCD Summer Jobs Program, participants attend work readiness and skill development sessions one day a week at Temple University.

The program is intended to provide constructive activities for young people and to act as an antidote to some of the problems plaguing the community. In addition to creating gainful employment opportunities, the summer job program will give young adults a sense of pride in their neighborhood while improving the overall quality of life for all who work, live and recreate in University City.

Free Rain Barrel Workshop for residents of the Lower Schuylkill Watershed
Wednesday, August 13 from 6:00-7:30pm

A rain barrel collects and stores stormwater runoff from rooftops. By temporarily holding the stormwater runoff during a rain event, you can help add capacity to the city’s sewer system and reduce sewer overflows to our creeks and rivers, our drinking water source. Also, the collected rain water can be reused to water lawns, gardens, window boxes or street trees.

The Rain Barrel Workshop is a project of the Lower Schuylkill Watershed Partnership, whose mission is the protection and enhancement of the River and its watershed. Financial sponsorship is being provided by the Philadelphia Water Department. The Water Department and Fairmount Park will be redirecting stormwater runoff into green spaces and restoring the creek itself over the next two decades. Your participation in this workshop will assist us with making this project a sustainable success.

Date: Wednesday, August 13
Time: 6:00-7:30pm
Location:
Community Education Center
3500 Lancaster Ave., Phila., PA 19104
www.thepartnershipcdc.org
Registration Deadline: August 6, 2008

Pre-registration is required and RSVPs should go to www.phillywatersheds.org/rainbarrel
(if you do not have computer access, call 215-685-4945) This is a rain or shine event. Please register early as space is limited.

The workshop will provide a brief overview of the rainwater cycle, the importance of storm water management at the property level, and how to install and use a rain barrel. At the completion of the workshop, the first households that pre-register for the seminar will be given one free 54 gallon Spruce Creek rain barrel.

This workshop is being sponsored by the Philadelphia Water Department in partnership with The Partnership CDC.

*Only one barrel per household

2008 Inspirational Gardens Awards

University City District (UCD), in partnership with UC Green’s network of greening enthusiasts, is pleased to announce the fourth annual University City Inspirational Gardens Awards, and is currently seeking nominations. Because well-tended gardens inspire others, UCD believes garden tenders deserve special praise and recognition.

The 2008 awards will honor nominees for outstanding examples of creative gardening approaches. All nominees will be invited to a private reception and recognition ceremony. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, September 26. Those nominating do not have to own the garden or even know the gardener—just inform UCD about a University City garden you enjoy and would like to see commended.

Bicycle Ambassador Program is Coming to University City

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia along with The City of Philadelphia, University City District and Fairmount Park are excited to announce the start of a new community program called the Bicycle Ambassadors.

The Ambassador program is designed to encourage adult bicyclists to ride more often and ride more safely as well as educate motorists on the rules of the road and provide tips for sharing the road. Ambassadors will attend community events as well as create our own events to teach bike safety, sharing the road, bike lane and bike path etiquette and how to bike to work and school. We will be working in the neighborhoods of Center City, University City and Fairmount Park. The program is currently under development and we look forward to a full launch in the spring of 2009. www.bicyclecoalition.org

Forward this email to your friends! They can sign up online. You can also tell them to email katie@ucityphila.org to sign up.
