A Big Day for Clark Park
On June 14, Mayor Michael Nutter, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Mike DeBernardinis, Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development, Commissioner of Recreation Susan Slawson, State Senator Anthony Williams, and Representative Jim Roebuck joined Frank Chance, President of Friends of Clark Park, Lewis Wendell, Executive Director of UCD, Joan Reilly, Philadelphia Horticultural Society, and other community notables, at Clark Park for a very important occasion. In addition to cutting the ribbon at the new basketball court, there was a presentation of $1,000,000 for projects at four West Philadelphia parks, $225,000 of which is earmarked for Clark Park. The City will match the funds, for a total investment of $2,000,000 in area parks and $450,000 in Clark Park!

UCGreen Tree Talk
Trees add beauty and grace to any community setting. They make life more enjoyable, peaceful, relaxing, and offer a rich inheritance for future generations. In University City, property owners may request new street, yard or public space trees provided by TreeVitalize at no cost, planted by community volunteers organized by UC Green. Visit www.ucgreen.org and complete and submit the Property Owner’s Request for a New Street Tree or call (215) 573-4684 or email info@ucgreen.org to request a hard copy.
Did you know?
- Trees store carbon and clean the atmosphere. In 50 years, one tree generates $30,000 in oxygen, recycles $35,000 of water, and removes $60,000 of air pollution. (USDA Forest Service)
- Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20%. (The Arbor Day Foundation)
- Trees reduce noise pollution by acting as a buffer and absorbing 50% of urban noise. (US Dept. of Energy)
- If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3% less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12%. (Dr. E. Greg McPherson, Center for Urban Forest Research)

2008 University City Inspirational Gardens Awards
University City District (UCD), in partnership with UC Green’s network of greening enthusiasts, is pleased to announce the fourth annual University City Inspirational Gardens Awards, and is currently seeking nominations. Because well-tended gardens inspire others, UCD believes garden tenders deserve special praise and recognition.
The 2008 awards will honor nominees for outstanding examples of creative gardening approaches. All nominees will be invited to a private reception and recognition ceremony. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, September 26. Those nominating do not have to own the garden or even know the gardener—just inform UCD about a University City garden you enjoy and would like to see commended.

World Cafe Live Mixes Wine & BBQ — The Results are Delicious!
When you think summer you think BBQ. That's why World Cafe Live's July wine event, Tuesday, July 15th at 7:00pm in Upstairs Live, has sought out local farmers to bring a summer feast on which Executive Chef Matthew Babbage will work his magic. This is not a typical sit down event! Feast at carving stations which will be serving good old American Barbecued Ribs, hand-carved Brazilian Churrasco Barbequed Beef, and a Valencian Seafood Paella, along with a Grilled Vegetable and Salad table that will of course include locally grown sweet corn, followed by their finale: Homemade Berry Pie! And dining on family style picnic tables will give the BBQ that added touch of home!
Start with a reception including cheese and tapas style hor d'oeurves along with two wines from Australia -- D'Arenberg "The Stump Jump" series and their Riesling Marsanne white -- along with a Grenache Shiraz red. Then they will open up the food stations for an 'all you can eat' feast with music and conversation, and the following wines from around Europe will be served at the wine bar manned by Joe Brandolo, your wine host. Feel free to ask any questions and see if you can stump the expert! For more information and to buy tickets, visit:
