13th Annual Freedom Seder with Rabbi Arthur Waskow
at the White Dog Cafe | Monday, April 14

“In every generation, Pharaoh; in every generation, freedom” -- says the Passover Haggadah. The story of Pharaoh and Exodus is one of the most powerful and insightful stories we have about the disasters of unaccountable top-down power and in its stead, the creation of freedom and community. This year, in our society and in our souls -- what Pharaohs are forcing us into a Tight and Narrow Place, and how do we free ourselves?” In an evening of delightful song, delicious food, and deepening thought, we will explore these questions. The Seder begins at 6:00pm on Monday, April 14.

Rabbi Arthur Waskow is founder and director of The Shalom Center, which brings Jewish and other spiritual thought and practice to bear on seeking peace, pursuing justice, healing the earth, and celebrating community. Named a Wisdom Keeper by the United Nations in 1996, Waskow was named one of the 50 most influential American rabbis by Newsweek magazine in 2007. He created The Freedom Seder in 1969, the first Haggadah for Passover to intertwine the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery with the modern liberation struggles not only of the Jewish people, but also the Black community in America and other peoples.

$38 includes service, three course dinner, glass of wine, tax & gratuity ($30 for Senior citizens (65+) and full time students-with advance notification.) Singles welcome at group tables. Call 215-386-9224 for reservations.

Need a Specific Tool For a Home Improvement Project? West Philly Tool Library Can Help!

The West Philly Tool Library loans tools to community members so that they might perform simple home maintenance and repair, tend their yards and gardens, build projects, learn new skills, and meet neighbors. They aim to be a community resource to provide home owners and tenants, long-time residents and newcomers with the tools (and the knowledge to work the tools!) they need.

The Library is a fiscally sponsored project of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC), is located at 4620 Woodland Avenue and is open every Saturday morning from 9am to noon. The Tool Library is funded in part from members ($20/year for general membership or a one-time payment of $200 for a lifetime membership) and in part from community supporters, including Woodland Building Supply, the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, and others.

Synthesist Jeffrey Koepper Returns to The Gatherings Concert Series | Saturday, April 19

Baltimore Electronic Musicians Jeffrey Koepper and Jason Sloan perform in the remarkable setting of St. Mary's Hamilton Village on 19 April 2008 as part of The Gatherings.

Renowned for his technical abilities and restorative powers, Jeffrey Koepper is distinguished for his work in maintaining and reviving vintage electronic music equipment.

By creating the music of tomorrow with the technology of yesterday, "Analogue Jeff" the gearhead transforms into Jeffrey Koepper the artist. Applying his vast technical knowledge of music making equipment towards programming evocative ethereal sounds and strong rhythmic designs, Koepper produces music of impressive depth and rare intelligence.

Jason Sloan is a visual performance/sound/installation artist. His aural work is created with computers, synths, guitar and environmental sounds extracted from his surroundings and aligns with the spiritual. He considers his music auditory stimulation, representing a transcendence of the physical world.

Jeffrey Koepper with Jason Sloan will perform live at The Gatherings Concert Series on Saturday, April 19 at 8:00pm in the church sanctuary of St. Mary's Hamilton Village, 3916 Locust Walk (east of 40th & Locust) on the Penn campus in West Philadelphia. Admission (at the door) is $20; $10 for full time students with proper ID. Advance Tickets are available at a discount from TicketWeb. For information please call 610-734-1009.

Register Today for the 16th Annual
University City 5K Run | Saturday, May 3

Since 1993, the Nicholas P. Pipino Scholarship Foundation and the Drexel University Office of Alumni Relations have hosted the University City 5K Run to support scholarship assistance and celebrate the life of Nicholas Pipino, a Drexel University senior who fell victim to a senseless act of violence while working at his part-time job at Cavanaugh’s Bar & Restaurant in University City.

To date, the foundation has provided more than $125,000 in direct scholarship aid to deserving students. All generous donations from an individual or organization will directly contribute to this initiative. In return for your donation, your person/company will be recognized in conjunction with your level of support. Your contribution will not only assist in supporting this year’s race participants, but will also help subsidize expenses and allow us to build the scholarship endowment.

Your sponsorship consideration for this year’s University City 5K Run is greatly appreciated. To discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact Richard Kopp – Associate Director of Alumni Relations at Drexel University – by phone at 215-895-2793 or by email at rkopp@drexel.edu.

Additionally, experienced and amateur runners, friends, family members and supporters are also encouraged to register to participate in the nationally certified race. Race participants will again take to the streets of West Philadelphia for the 16th Annual University City 5K Run scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2008. It will be immediately followed by the Alumni Family Picnic which is open to everyone who attends or participates in the run. Unable to run? Show your support and make a scholarship donation.
