Litter Co. Enlists UCD Residents for Earth Day Clean-upPhiladelphia, PA (15 April 2002) – After the April 4th launch of University City District’s new anti-litter campaign, Litter Co., UCD, and residents team up for a University City-wide Litter Co. Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 20th in honor of Earth Day. As part of the Litter Co. Clean Up, over 300 resident volunteers throughout the district will be sweeping, bagging trash, and helping to beautify their neighborhoods. The Litter Co. Clean Up Cavalcade of vans and trucks will be visiting over 35 blocks of clean up sites with refreshments, music, and roving back & neck massages for the volunteers. Volunteers will also sign the Litter Co. banner as a pledge to "Kick Litter in the Can." University City District will provide free trash bags, work gloves, and extra help with big items. Employees, residents, and do-gooders are encouraged to organize a group and register the project by April 18th at 215 243 0555, by email at litterco@ucityphila.org, or online at UCityphila.org. PLUS: One day mural project at Lea Elementary School, 47th/Spruce Sts., with 25 kids and their parents, designed by Jane Golden, Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation Mural Arts Program artistic director. The University City District launched Litter Co., the "Litter Co-alition," as an alliance of community leaders, residents, elected officials, kids, parents, students, employees, and neighborhood associations who have signed the pledge to educate, advocate, and practice keeping University City litter-free. Celebrating its fifth year of operation, University City District builds effective partnerships to maintain a clean and safe environment and to promote, plan, and advocate for University City's diverse urban community. The UCD's programs to improve streetscapes and parks, remove trash and graffiti, provide technical assistance to home- and business owners, increase public safety, and publicize University City's advantages have improved the quality of life since 1997.
