Despite the Litterbug's Antics, Litter Co. Volunteers Clean Up Univ. City

Philadelphia, PA (5 November 2002) – More than 200 Anti-Litter Coalition volunteers removed more than 750 pounds of litter, furniture, tires, and construction debris from University City’s streets and sidewalks as part of Litter Co’s University City-wide clean up for the 12th Make A Difference Day on October 26th .

The Litter Co. Clean Up Cavalcade van visited groups with water, fruit, and granola bars donated by 7-Eleven at 42nd & Walnut, Freshgrocer, and University Thriftway at 43rd and Walnut Streets. Additional sponsors are Max Paul’s Central City Toyota and Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.

The nemesis of clean street advocates, the Litterbug also made the rounds of block cleanups in order to disturb volunteers’ efforts. Early in the day Litterbug received a ticket from SWEEP Officer Renee Joyner for littering on Chestnut Street. An unrepentant scofflaw, the Bug threw the notice on the ground as soon as she drove off. Finally, the Bug was apprehended by the Philadelphia Police when it was found scattering trash in Clark Park.

University City District launched Litter Co. as an alliance of community leaders, residents, elected officials, kids, parents, students, employees, and neighborhood associations who have signed the pledge to educate, advocate, and practice keeping University City litter-free. The next University City Litter Co. Clean Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 7th from 9 am to 1 pm. Visit the Litter Co. website at www.litterco.org.

University City District builds effective partnerships to maintain a clean and safe environment and to promote, plan, and advocate for University City's diverse urban community. The UCD's programs to improve streetscapes and parks, remove trash and graffiti, provide technical assistance to home- and business owners, increase public safety, and publicize University City's advantages have improved the quality of life since 1997.
