A Taste of the Sweet Life Arrives on Baltimore Avenue
(Philadelphia, PA) – For those with a discerning sweet tooth who appreciate the flavor that only home-made treats can offer, the newly-opened Sugar Hill Bakery and Café is a real destination. Located at 4908 Baltimore Avenue, Sugar Hill invites you to stop by, relax, and enjoy a place "where a slice of life is sweetened with a cup of laughter and a teaspoon of pure love". From triple-layer carrot cake to sweet potato cheesecake to cookies and muffins, Sugar Hill has a wide selection of mouth-watering baked goods that can be taken out or enjoyed in the charmingly refurbished storefront. Don’t miss the immense collection of "Cake Walk" sheet music artwork from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If there is a "must have" dessert that Sugar Hill doesn’t carry, just ask them and they’ll accommodate your special craving.
For baker and owner Kameelah Mu’Min, Sugar Hill truly is a labor of love. Kameelah began her culinary career at age 12, perfecting the distinguished art of oatmeal raisin cookies and chocolate walnut brownies and falling in love with the seductive aromas of vanilla and cinnamon. Now, with husband Bilal Bell and daughter Laila by her side, you too can experience the sweetness of Kameelah’s baked goods.
"Baking is the easy part," Kameelah says, "what was difficult was securing a space, hiring a contractor, and navigating the paperwork for permits and regulations. Thankfully, University City District’s (UCD) corridor project was there to help me through this often trying process." The goals of UCD&Mac226;s Baltimore Avenue Commercial Corridor Project are to ensure the cleanliness, attractiveness, and safety of Baltimore Avenue. UCD also offers design, marketing, and technical services to existing and new businesses.
This project, now in its second year, is funded by William Penn Foundation, LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), Citizens Bank, and University City District.
"Healthy neighborhoods require a diversity of merchandise that reflects the needs of the community such as book stores, coffee shops, grocery stores, and restaurants," says Eric Goldstein, UCD’s Executive Director, "Sugar Hill Bakery, and its almost certain success, reflects what I believe is the beginning of a wave of investment-oriented businesses focusing on satisfying the broadest demands of the local community, especially on Baltimore Avenue."
