Tues., Sept. 16 at 8:00 p.m. - Indignation Day - A Virtual Discussion with Philip Roth - award-winning author Philip Roth joins us through the powers of the virtual world for a rare interview and discussion of his new novel, Indignation. Against the backdrop of the Korean War, a young man faces life’s unimagined chances and terrifying consequences. Indignation, Roth’s 29th book, is a story of inexperience, foolishness, intellectual resistance, sexual discovery, courage, and error.


Wed., Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. - Rinku Sen with Fekkak Mamdouh - Discussion and Signing - The Accidental American: Immigration and Citizenship in the Age of Globalization. Journalist and immigration expert Rinku Sen joins us to discuss her new book. Sen reframes the immigration debate by offering the remarkable story of Fekkak Mamdouh, an “Accidental American” who, after his experiences immediately following 9/11, has become a champion for America’s most marginalized workers.


Thurs., Sept. 18 at 4:00 p.m. - Leif Gustavson - Discussion and Signing - Youth Learning On Their Own Terms: Creative Practices and Classroom Teaching - Leif Gustavson, Penn Alum C’01, reveals how teenagers from different racial and class backgrounds become involved with, refine, practice, and learn from distinctive creative forms: zine writing, graffiti, and turntablism. Dr. Gustavson convincingly shows how developing a respect and understanding of the youth-initiated creative practices that occur outside schools can offer educators the opportunity to directly influence their teaching inside the classroom.


Wed., Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. - Kim Kellner - Discussion and Signing - Wrestling with Starbucks Author Kim Fellner explores the phenomenon of Starbucks Shops around-the-world. With over 100 locations in the Philadelphia region alone, this coffee retail giant with humble beginnings has become an actor and icon in the global economy. Fellner takes readers on an expedition into the muscle and soul of the coffee company. Through the voices of Central American coffee farmers, officers at corporate headquarters, independent cafe owners, unionists, baristas, traders, global justice activists, and consumers, the author explores the forces that affect Starbucks’s worth and worthiness.

- Rebecca T. Alpert - Discussion and Signing - Whose Torah? A Concise Guide to Progressive Judaism - Rabbi and Associate Professor Rebecca Alpert examines six of the world’s most critical issues - poverty, race, gender, sexuality, war, and the environment -- and draws on the sources of Jewish tradition to frame a progressive outlook on contemporary life.


Tues., Sept. 30 at 6:00 p.m. - Eric Schneider - Discussion and Signing - Smack: Heroin and the American City - Penn Associate Professor Eric Schneider, in this provocative new history of heroin, explains what is distinctly urban about the King of Underworld Drugs. Schneider uncovers how New York, as the principal distribution hub, organized the global trade in heroin and sustained the subcultures that supported its use.
