University City Arts League Pottery Expo - Friday, August 29
The University City Arts League, located at 4226 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA, announces an exciting lineup of new classes and events for the fall, from hip-hop Dj-ing to a pottery expo.
On Friday, August 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m., the Arts League will host its first “Pottery Expo.” Participants will make pottery with instructor Eva Sasdi in the ceramics studio, and enjoy food, drink, and live music in the gallery. Rabbit Stampede will be the featured band.
The second weekend in September will be an exciting one at the Arts League, with an opening reception for the faculty exhibition on Friday, Sept. 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m., and an open house on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2-4 p.m. These events will introduce the public to the many talents of Arts League faculty members, giving them a chance to show their own work and demonstrate the skills taught in their classes.

New classes for the fall semester feature special programs for young people after school:
Beginning Sept. 8, youth classes will run from 3:30-5:30 in the afternoon. The classes conclude Dec. 19. New offerings include a beginning hip hop DJ class led by DJ Lisa Love, a creative writing class taught by Ann de Forest, and a visual art class taught by Aubrey Levinthal.
Other classes for young people will feature 2-D visual art, creative writing, and pottery. Starting in the fall, Richard Aldorasi will offer his papermaking class for youth. Yasha Butler will offer a teen pottery class. Continuing from last season are Eva Sasdi’s pottery classes and Leila Falcon’s “Art for Kids.”
The fall semester will also feature new adult classes in knitting, photography, dance, sculpture, and jewelry.
New visual arts offerings for adults will include Aubrey Levinthal’s jewelry and sculpture classes; Theodore Harris’s collage class; and Johanna Marshall’s “Knitting Beyond Scarves.” Richard Aldorasi will offer a papermaking class covering seven paper arts disciplines from around the world. And Sarah Stefana Smith will offer “The Language of Photography” using digital techniques. In dance, Gabriele Guma will offer a contemporary jazz class, and Mikaela Joy Willis will offer a Hula/Hawaiian workshop.
Fall exhibitions at the Arts League include a faculty show in September, paintings and drawings by Rodney Thoms in October, and sculpture by David Krevolin in November. The annual Craft Show will round out the season in December.
