What is a Rain Barrel? A rain barrel collects and stores stormwater runoff from rooftops. By temporarily holding the stormwater runoff during a rain event, you can help add capacity to the city’s sewer system and reduce sewer overflows to our creeks and rivers, our drinking water source. Also, the collected rain water can be reused to water lawns, gardens, window boxes or street trees.
The Rain Barrel Workshop is a project of the Lower Schuylkill Watershed Partnership, whose mission is the protection and enhancement of the River and its watershed. Financial sponsorship is being provided by the Philadelphia Water Department. The Water Department and Fairmount Park will be redirecting stormwater runoff into green spaces and restoring the creek itself over the next two decades. This workshop is being sponsored by the Philadelphia Water Department in partnership with The Partnership CDC.
