Tripsichore have been as busy as bees – ant like in their industry – and they are buzzing
with excitement to let the world know about their all new THE INSECTS. It is a wildly
inventive piece of yoga theatre where the asanas and vinyasas are used as the movement
vocabulary of a group of curious insect creatures. In the course of their daily experiments,
Tripsichore were struck by the way so many postures had a resemblance to insect-like
creatures and so they embarked on a tale that uses the extraordinary grace of yoga to
depict the wondrous and dangerous lives of these creatures. If you think insects are just
yucky, you’ll think again after seeing this.
An ageing hippie settles down to meditate under a night sky. Tired, he nods off and
dreams that he has been transported into an insect realm. It is a place that is dominated
by a vicious queen – jealous of any potential rivals. When a new baby queen is hatched,
she dispatches her hornet guards to dispose of her. And this is the scene that the hippie
must deal with – altering his consciousness to come to terms with the insect reality and, in
turn, influencing them with what he knows.
Music for the production features the world famous pedal steel guitar player B J Cole as
well as material by Tripsichore perennials LagoonWest and Martin McDougall.
Tripsichore’s Yoga Theatre celebrates yoga philosophy and extraordinary physical
prowess. They give the 5000 year old discipline of yoga a sensually modern twist. Yoga
Theatre combines the spirituality of yoga with acrobatic agility and grace and the
emotional pull of a good play.
