In its 114th year, the Penn Relays will take place at historic Franklin Field, April 24-26

As the first and oldest of relay meets, the Penn Relays is a must-see event. In its 114th year, the Penn Relays will take place at historic Franklin Field, April 24-26. During that time, races will be run at an average of one every five minutes over 33 hours of competition. Held in America’s most historic city, fans get a chance to see the finest track and field athletes, from ages eight to 80! In addition to elite competition, the Carnival Village and street vending surrounding Franklin Field add an exciting cultural element to the experience.

Safety and Security

The University of Pennsylvania Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has issued the following guidelines in conjunction with the Penn Relays which will be held the week of April 21, 2008. The following guidelines will be strictly enforced by the University of Pennsylvania police force.


ALL bags must be smaller than 11 in. x 17 in.

Food must be contained in clear plastic bags.

Sealed plastic water bottles and cardboard juice boxes must not be larger than 11 in. x 17 in.

Coolers, large backpacks, large gym bags, glass bottles and cans will NOT be permitted.


There will be security personnel at every entrance (including athlete entrances) to check contents of bags and your person upon entering the Penn Relays. Please allow for ample time for this security procedure and plan your arrival at the facility accordingly. This is applicable for athletes as well as spectators.

Getting to Franklin Field

Franklin Field is located at the University of Pennsylvania campus, on 33rd Street between Walnut and South Streets.


Penn is conveniently accessible by SEPTA bus, trolley, and rail (R1, R2, R3). Public transportation is recommended because parking around Franklin Field is limited and can be both expensive and difficult to locate. Lower cost off-campus parking with a shuttle bus to the campus is available at Campus Park and Ride (www.campusparkandride.com). Campus Park and Ride is not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania.


Weight restrictions on the South Street Bridge dictate that busses MAY NOT use the bridge or its I-76 exit. Please use the 30th St. or University Ave. exits. For bus directions please visit ThePennRelays.com.

From the Philadelphia International Airport and points south of Philadelphia

Follow I-95 North to exit 13 (I-76 West/Valley Forge/PA-291/Island Ave). Merge onto Penrose Ave./PA-291 East toward I-76 West/Valley Forge. Turn Left onto S. 26TH ST/PA-291 E. which becomes I-76 West. Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). Go through the first traffic light and head to the left lanes. Make a left at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.


From the New Jersey Turnpike and the New York City Area

Take the NJ Turnpike South Exit #4 (NJ 73, Camden, Philadelphia) to NJ 73 North and then onto I-295 South. After passing Exit 28 on I-295 South, stay to your left and then merge onto I-76 Exit #26 (Philadelphia, Camden). After merging, stay to you left and look for I-76 Walt Whitman Bridge (Toll $3). Cross the bridge into Philadelphia. Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). Go through the first traffic light and head to the left lanes. Make a left at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.


From the Pennsylvania Turnpike and points west of Philadelphia

Exit the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Exit 24 (Valley Forge) then merge onto I-76 East (Philadelphia). Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). At the top of the ramp, you can only make a right. Make a right at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.


From the Ben Franklin Bridge and Camden

Take US-30 (Admiral Wilson Boulevard) to the Ben Franklin Bridge (Toll #3). Then take I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway) to I-76 East (Int'l Airport, Schuylkill Expressway). Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). At the top of the ramp, you can only make a right. Make a right at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.


From the Walt Whitman Bridge and the Atlantic City Expressway

Take the Atlantic City Expressway to NJ-42 North. NJ-42 will divide into Express and Local lanes. Take the Express lanes to I-76 East Walt Whitman Bridge (Toll $3). Cross the bridge into Philadelphia. Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). Go through the first traffic light and head to the left lanes. Make a left at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.


From Northeast Philadelphia and Northern Suburbs

Take US-1 South (Roosevelt Blvd) to I-76 East (Central Philadelphia). Take Exit #345 (30th Street Station). At the top of the ramp, you can only make a right. Make a right at the second traffic light which is Market Street. Follow Market Street to 36th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Make another right on 38th Street and public parking is available at Lot 30 right on the corner of 38th and Walnut Streets. OR Follow Market Street to 40th Street and make a left. Make a right at the second light onto Walnut Street. Public parking is available at Lot 40 at 40th and Walnut Streets right past the Fresh Grocer.
