Don't miss this exciting and historic program!!

The program will feature the reconstruction of an historic work by José Limón and Pauline Koner from 1960 called Barren Sceptre. This duet, with music by Gunther Schuller, is based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, depicting the rise and fall of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and their lust for power. José Limón is one of the most significant choreographers of the twentieth century and Pauline Koner was a world-renowned solo artist and choreographer, who danced as special guest artist with the José Limón Company for 15 years. Barren Sceptre will be performed by, company member Janet Pilla and guest artist, Meredith Rainey. The Company will also present A time to laugh…a time to dance from José Limón's signature piece, There is a Time, with music by Norman Dello Joio.

The Program will include two other historic works. Concertino (1956), by Pauline Koner, to music by G.B. Pergolesi, is a dance for a Lady played company member Christine Taylor, and her ladies in waiting. This work uses the flavor of court dances to depict three facets of the life of a Renaissance Lady. Lament for the Death of a Bullfighter, (1945) by Anna Sokolow, is a solo to music by Silvestre Revueltas. Suellen Haag, from SOKOLOW NOW, Anna Sokolow Archive Company will perform this work.  Anna Sokolow remains one of the most innovative, uncompromising and influential modern dance choreographers of the twentieth century.
.
Two works from Dancefusion repertory will complete the program. Off the Hook (1997), by Colin Connor, created for company member Joe Cicala, is a solo that belies our false sense of control over the waves of mail, phone messages, advertising, emails and faxes that flood over us. Set to a score by Alan Terricciano, this piece is a glorious nightmare, a one man pile-up on today’s information highway. Christina’s World (1990), by artistic director Gwendolyn Bye, was inspired by the paintings of Andrew Wyeth and set to an original score by Philadelphia composer, John Levis. The dance reflects three stages in the life of Christina Olsen, a woman born with a debilitating disease, but who had a spirit for life that transcended her physical limitations. This work will feature four young students from the Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center along with the Company.
