International House Presents - Across the Roof of the World: Beijing to Kathmandu

International House Philadelphia is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Jill Katz on view February 1 – March 7, 2008. For two weeks in May 2007, photographer Jill Katz traveled with a group of twelve international travelers and together they made their way overland across Friendship Highway via the heart of northern China, then south through the high-altitude Tibetan plateau to Kathmandu.

A visit to Tibet is without doubt a most awe-inspiring and humbling experience, where compassion among its people and Buddhist values permeate everyday life. As this once independent mountain kingdom changes steadily with the influence of other countries and becomes more knitted into the political and economic fabric of China by the day, it is a fascinating, as well as saddening experience to visit this region.

Taking cues from the multicolored prayer-flag strewn landscapes, these images, begin in Beijing and follow two days on the Chongqing –Tibet railway to Lhasa, passing through some of China’s most historic cities.
