Univesity City Celebrates the Unveiling of New Custom Bike Racks

On Saturday, May 21st from 11am – 1pm, University City District (UCD) will be celebrating the installation of new custom bicycle racks in University City at Cedar Park (50th Street and Baltimore Avenue).  At 11:30am, UCD along with Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell will publicly unveil an example of the racks in Cedar Park, on the northeast corner of 50th and Baltimore. Lucky Thompson Trio will provide musical entertainment along with complimentary refreshments, including cereal from Cereality, and a free raffle.

The celebration will include members of the University City and bicycle community such as:

  •  University City District will provide general University City neighborhood information as well as complimentary refreshments and a free raffle, which includes children’s helmets
  • Neighborhood Bike Works will be prepared to evaluate bikes on safety as well as provide bicycle safety materials
  • Penn Police will share safety tips and provide bicycle registration to protect bikes from theft
  • Bicycle Coalition will provide free Philadelphia bike maps while promoting the annual Freedom Valley Bike Ride
  • Firehouse Bikes will be featuring their services and a used bicycle sale
  • Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) will be giving out Pennsylvania bike manuals and free “Share the Road” merchandise including pencils, keychains and brochures
  • Trophy Bikes will provide tips on safety while raffling exciting prizes
  • EMS will be giving out bike water bottles, catalogs and coupons and will participating in the raffle.

What will quickly become a signature urban object, the new bike racks are constructed using galvanized H.S.S. steel tube and an aluminum casting. Custom raised lettering with the words “Lancaster Avenue” or “Baltimore Avenue” makes the already unique design site specific.
